Confronting the problem of distracted driving.

Distracted driving is something that affects us all but is proving to be especially dangerous for young, inexperienced drivers. A recent study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that distraction was a factor in nearly six out of 10 moderate-to-severe teen crashes. If you’re a parent of a newly licensed or permitted driver, distracted driving is likely top of mind whenever your child is behind the wheel unsupervised.

Becoming part of the solution.

When Arbella’s Foundation introduced Distractology in 2010, it was one of the first programs in the country to address distracted driving. The Distractology driving simulator tour travels to high schools across New England and leads students though 45 minutes of hands-on instructional learning behind the wheel. Using simulations developed my UMass Amherst’s College of Engineering, participants learn to anticipate hidden hazards, react to the road and avoid accidents. Following the simulation training, students complete a 20-minute Web reinforcement of the lessons learned. Any driver licensed for three or fewer years or who has their learner’s permit is eligible for this free training.

Creating a movement, leading the way.

Since the Distractology program launched, insurance agents across New England have partnered with their local high school to educate young, inexperienced drivers about the dangers of distracted driving. To date more than 11,000 New England teens have taken the course. Drivers who have completed Distractology are proven to be 19 percent less likely to have an accident and 25 percent less likely to get traffic violations*. Ninety-five percent of students who participated in the program would recommend it to their friends.

Extending our Commitment.

In 2016, our Foundation recommitted to the Distractology program for an additional five years in response to continued demand. As part of the relaunch, the scenarios have been updated to address cell phones, the radio, and food and drink, in residential and highway conditions. The Distractology trailer has also been updated with eye-catching new imagery.
